Workshop Conference on Organizational Resilience A Tremendous Success

This week, the local Vancouver ASIS Chapter #190 successfully hosted a conference  entitled” Security’s Role in Enhancing Organizational Resilience” at the Wosk Centre for Dialogue – Simon Fraser University, downtown Vancouver.

Over 60 Security Professionals from Vancouver and other parts of Canada attended the two and one half day workshop to learn, participate and network in the emerging field of Organizational Resilience. The workshop attracted delegates from many diverse backgrounds including; healthcare, port authorities, logistics, educational institutions, commercial high rise, and Government enforcement agencies.

Kevin Calder, CPP (Calder and Associates) who was the Master of Ceremonies for the conference introduced recognized leaders in the field including; Dave Tyson (Apollo Information Systems), John Gargett (Trusys) and Steve Surfaro (Axis Communications) from the United States and Bob Harriman,  BC Hydro, George Bell,  BC Rapid Transit, and Orv Nickel, Maersk from the Vancouver area.

A key part of the workshop included a panel discussion on aspects of leadership and resilience planning hosted by Phill Banks, CPP (The Banks Group). The panel responded to many questions from delegates including the importance of front line guard services to how best to promote organizational resilience within the corporate structure. After the conference, Phill noted that “Judging by the caliber of questions from the delegates, there is no question that Leadership and Resilience was of interest to many as panel discussions could have continued at length”.

To round out the conference, Exhibitors were on hand during day 2 of the conference providing delegates an excellent opportunity to catch up and network with vendors on a one to one basis.

 

According to Dan Popowich, CPP (Garda),Canadian Pacific Chapter Vice Chairman and  conference organizer, “The workshop was a tremendous success providing an excellent opportunity for professionals to both learn and network with others on this leading topic”.  Dan noted that “We have had very positive feedback from some participants on the success of this conference as being one of the better conferences held in Canada in 2011”. “Furthermore, we also have a strong recommendation from many to continue to hold future conferences on leading edge topics that are important to many security professionals.”

Dave Tyson CPP,  keynote speaker and ASIS International Director also commented on the level of interest from Canadian delegates on this leading topic. Dave noted that “ The interest from delegates clearly demonstrates that Canada and the Vancouver Chapter is certainly recognized for its role in educating security professionals in leading edge topics”.

Dave Tyson is currently Vice President, Security Risk Advisory Services for Apollo Information Systems delivering Enterprise Security Risk Advisory services for Fortune 500 companies.Prior to his current position, Dave was the Senior Director and CISO Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). He has been working in the IT and Physical Security Industry for 27 Years. His focus has been on Security Convergence and Managing Enterprise Security Risk.
